Support: VPN
OpenVPN is the recommended choice. Only use PPTP where OpenVPN is not an option.
What makes us different:
- No default bandwidth caps, you should be able to burst your full line speeds
- Unmetered transfer, you won't get cut off after hitting n gigabytes per month.
- Easy install and use OpenVPN setups for Windows and MAC
- VPN works on Windows, MAC, *nix, iphone, windows mobile, routers, and more.
- Both PPTP and the far more secure OpenVPN at the same price
What is VPN:
VPN is a virtual private network. It is an encrypted connection to protect all
of your traffic. Nobody between you and our server can see anything you do. Anything that may have been blocked
by your local admin from you reaching, will be available. In addition, your IP is shielded from anywhere you visit.
Lets break that down into real world examples. Do you use a wireless network (WIFI)?
If so, did you know that someone might be sitting in their car two blocks away watching and/or recording everything
you do on the Internet?
They are looking for logins, passwords, bank accounts, credit cards, anything of value they can gather. Did you
also know that even the best WIFI encryption can be easily broken by readily available free open source tools?
You might think, "I don't broadcast my SSID, they can't find me", think again, there are tools to find
hidden networks just like there are tools to crack the encryption**.
Do you ever use a coffee shop, hotel, or other public WIFI network? Anybody could be listening in there. Anyone
else in that shop, someone in a car outside, even one of the employees could be capturing your traffic and searching
it for information of value. There are many people out there where the first thing they do when they come in contact
with a wireless network, is start cracking and seeing what they can find.
These are just two of the areas where a VPN will protect you. It is a fully encrypted connection between you and
our server and nobody between you and our server can decrypt your VPN traffic, regardless of where you are or how
you connect to the Internet. It keeps you safe from prying eyes, not to mention a potentially stolen identity.
Are you stuck behind a restricted network? Some places severely limit where you
can go and what you can run while connected to their network. A VPN will get you past those blocks. Everything
will be available to you.
Beyond just protecting you from prying eyes and circumventing blocks it also shields you from the places you visit.
Your IP is hidden from them. They can only see ours. This means that they cannot find your location or identity
unless you give it to them. You don't need every place you visit knowing who you are and where you are, frankly,
it's none of their business.
The VPN is unmetered, meaning we don't have monthly transfer limits. It should
also be more reliably the fastest and most responsive of our services. Your choice of both PPTP and OpenVPN. OpenVPN
is the better choice all around, use PPTP only when OpenVPN is not an option.
Everything you want to know about VPN
** see Air Snort, WEPcrack, Kismet, Airjack, HostAP, Dweputils, Airsnarf,
Hotspotter, ASLEAP, IKEcrack for examples of these open source tools that readily crack your WIFI encryption, detect
hidden networks, and intercept your traffic.
VPN Tips and Utils:
You can go here to verify that
you are using the VPN. The IP shown should be that of the VPN server, not your ISP.
Can't connect to facebook, youtube, or somewhere
else?
Please be aware that you may be susceptible to DNS leaks
while using a VPN depending upon your operating system and it's configuration
WARNING: If the VPN loses it's connection
your computer may just route your traffic normally (more of an issue with PPTP than with OpenVPN). You may want
to take additional steps with a firewall, the use of a ssh tunnel, the use of a monitor like TunnelRat, or manually
setting the default VPN route as persistant to ensure that it does not happen.
Notes: Please understand your experience
relies heavily upon upon a factor outside of our control, your route. If any router between you and us has difficulties,
your speeds will be affected. There are likely 10-14 routers between you and our server.
Constant Downloading:
Those who do nothing but max their high speed broadband downloading or uploading 24x7 will have their speed throttled back so that we can keep burst speeds high for everyone else.
If you are wondering if this will affect you, it probably will not, those who it will effect know it will effect them. They are the %1 who do nothing with their Internet connection but download day and night for days on end.
If you are one of these 1% and want a dedicated multimegabit pipe that you can keep maxed out 24x7 then you'll need to purchase a dedicated setup. We apologize, but we are unable to sell you an effectively dedicated high speed pipe for under $10 a mo.
